Liposomes are  small vesicles whose membrane resembles that of a lipid bilayer. In fact, liposomes can be created from the same types of phospholipids found in cell membranes. The internal layer of the liposome membrane repells water soluble substances, while the core of the vesicle has water compatible properties. Because if this, liposomes have the ability to simultaneously encapsulate and release substance blends with distinctly different solubilities of their single components .

Apart from therapeutic substances used, certain phospholipids themselves already possess intrinsic benefits beyond their role as carriers, with phosphatidylcholine standing out prominently. Phoshpatidylcholine serves as a pivotal structural support for cell membranes and forms a key component of bile micelles. Its application extends to liver regeneration and detoxification in cases of fatty liver disease and hepatitis, as well as arterial plaque clearance and nerve damage repair.

Liposomal Essential Oil formulations slowly increase their liposome size over time. They also release liposome enclosed oil content with time. This process starts after about six months and starts affecting shelf life after about one year.

Shields against the hostile conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, heightening  oral uptake and absorption. Liposomes seamlessly integrate into cellular membranes releasing their contents directly into the cell, avoiding the digestive processes that often restricts  absorption of compounds.
