Essential oils with high levels of 1,8-cineole may pose risks of central nervous system (CNS) and respiratory issues, especially in young children. Contraindications: It is not advisable to apply these oils to the face of infants or children under the age of ten. The recommended maximum daily oral dose for adults is 600 mg, and the maximum allowable dermal use level is 20%. Health Canada stipulates that eucalyptus oil should not exceed 25% concentration in cosmetic products (Health Canada Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, March 2011). Eucalyptus oil is classified as a 'Schedule 6' poison in Australia, indicating a moderate potential for harm. This classification is typically accompanied by strong warnings and safety instructions on product labels, including keeping the product out of children's reach and avoiding internal use. However, the use of child-resistant closures for eucalyptus oil products is not commonly practiced outside of Australia.
The German Commission E Monograph for eucalyptus oil recommends a daily oral dose ranging from 300 to 600 mg and dermal application levels between 5% and 20%. It also advises against internal use in cases of inflammatory gastrointestinal tract and bile duct diseases, as well as severe liver disease.
