Chir Pine Oil (Turpentine)

During the distillation process, the resin extracted from the Chir Pine tree produces an essential oil commonly known as turpentine, along with non-volatile Rosin. In Chir Pine resin, the composition consists of 75% rosin, 22% turpentine oil, and a 3% loss. The essential oil is also called Sarala or Shrivasa in India.
Turpentine oil derived from Chir Pine holds medical value as a rubefacient, particularly in the treatment of various rheumatic conditions like lumbago, arthritis, and neuralgia. This oil plays a vital role in numerous ointments, liniments, and lotions designed to alleviate minor aches, pains, and chest congestion when applied externally to the chest and throat. It contains key compounds such as alpha- and beta-pinene, carene, and longifoline, which are responsible for its therapeutic properties. Chir Pine oil serves as a decongestant, effectively clearing the respiratory tract when applied topically. The oil also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, making it an excellent remedy for relieving joint discomfort and pain. Turpentine oils of high quality should have a high α-pinene content, with a combined α- and β-pinene content of over 70%.

Toxicity:

Risk of skin sensitisation if the oil becomes oxidised. Prolonged inhalation may have the potential to induce asthma. It is advisable to steer clear of aged or oxidised oils. Dermal application should be avoided on hypersensitive, diseased, or damaged skin, as well as in children under 2 years of age. To prevent the oxidation of Chir Pine oil, which contains α-pinene and δ-3-carene, it is strongly recommended to store it in a dark, airtight container within a refrigerator. Additionally, adding an antioxidant to products containing this oil is advised. As per the Commission E Monograph for rectified turpentine oil, it is permissible in liquid and semisolid preparations for topical application at levels ranging from 10% to 50%. Essential oils derived from the Pinaceae family, encompassing the Pinus and Abies genera, should only be utilized when peroxide levels are maintained at the lowest practical level, for instance, by incorporating antioxidants during the production process. The occupational exposure limit for turpentine vapors in Finland and the USA is 100 ppm or 560 mg/m3.
